We were privileged yesterday afternoon, to have hosted the United Nations (UN) Assistant Secretary General Mrs. Gillian Triggs, who is also United Nations’ High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in charge of Protection and her delegation, that included His Royal Highness Chief Mumena of the Koande speaking people of North Western Province.
Since our independence, Zambia has been sanctuary to lots of refugees from Africa and beyond, a responsibility which we have proudly committed a lot of resources for.
In our meeting with the UN Assistant Secretary General, we reiterated our call to the international community to be more proactive in addressing potential hot spots around the world before they erupted, as that is more costly.
For years, Zambia has not only hosted refugees from trouble spots but has enormously contributed towards various peacekeeping Missions, amidst constrained budgetary resources.
We are thankful for the great work the UN is doing in alleviating the suffering of our global citizens found in vulnerable situations.
